What is Tajweed and Why Does It Matter?

What is Tajweed?

Tajweed (تجويد) literally means 'to make well' or 'to improve.' In the context of Quran, it refers to the rules of correct pronunciation and recitation of the Quran. Just as English has phonics rules for reading, Arabic has Tajweed rules for reading the Quran with proper pronunciation and melodic flow.

Why Does Tajweed Matter?

When we read the Quran with Tajweed, we are reading it the way the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) received it from Angel Jibreel and taught it to his Companions. Proper Tajweed ensures we don't change the meaning of the Quran through mispronunciation. It also beautifies our recitation, drawing us closer to the words of Allah.

When Should Children Start Learning Tajweed?

The ideal age to start is between 5–7 years old, once a child has completed the Noorani Qaida (the foundational Arabic primer) and can confidently read Arabic letters and short words. However, Tajweed can be introduced alongside basic Arabic learning — it's never too late to start.

Our Quran Programme — From Beginner to Hifz

A structured journey from Arabic alphabet to Quran memorisation and spiritual connection.

Stage 1: Noorani Qaida

3–6 months

The foundation of Quran reading. Children learn all 28 Arabic letters, their sounds, and how they connect to form words. We use the time-tested Noorani Qaida method, recognised across the Muslim world as the best starting point for Quran beginners.

Stage 2: Quran Recitation with Tajweed

6–12 months

Once children complete the Noorani Qaida, they begin reading directly from the Quran while applying Tajweed rules. We start with short surahs (like Al-Fatiha, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, Al-Nas) and progressively build toward longer chapters.

Stage 3: Fluency & Comprehension

1–2 years

Building reading fluency across all 30 juz of the Quran. Students learn the meaning of what they're reading and develop a deeper connection to the Quranic text. The focus shifts from decoding to comprehension and spiritual connection.

Stage 4: Hifz (Memorisation)

1–3 years

For students who wish to memorise the Quran, we offer a structured Hifz programme. This requires dedication and regular repetition, but with our support system and small class sizes, students progress smoothly. Many students at Taalam complete significant portions of Hifz.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child start Quran classes?

We welcome children from age 4–5 for our nursery programme (focusing on Arabic letters and basic duas) and from age 5–6 for formal Quran classes starting with Noorani Qaida. However, it's never too late — we have students who start at 10, 12, or even as adults.

Do you offer Hifz (memorisation) programme?

Yes — for students who have completed Quran reading with Tajweed and wish to memorise the Quran, we offer a structured Hifz programme. This requires significant commitment (daily revision at home is essential), but we provide full support throughout the journey. Many of our students are working towards or have completed significant portions of Hifz.

What is the difference between Quran and Tajweed?

Quran is the book — the actual text of Allah's words revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Tajweed is the set of rules for correctly reciting that text — the 'how to' of Quran reading. Think of it like: Quran = the music, Tajweed = the musical notation that tells you how to play it.

How long does it take to learn to read the Quran?

With consistent attendance (2+ hours per week), most children complete the Noorani Qaida and begin reading short surahs within 3–6 months. Building fluency across the full Quran typically takes 1–2 years of regular study. Hifz (full memorisation) takes 2–4 years depending on dedication and consistency.
