Safeguarding & Child Protection
The safety and welfare of every child in our care comes before everything else.
Last updated: 2026-07-02
Taalam Learning Centre is committed to providing a safe, caring and welcoming environment for all children. We believe every child has the right to be protected from harm, and that safeguarding is the responsibility of everyone connected with our centre.
1. Purpose & scope
This policy sets out how Taalam Learning Centre safeguards and promotes the welfare of children attending our onsite classes in Manor Park and our live online lessons. It applies to all teachers, staff, volunteers and anyone acting on behalf of the centre.
2. Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead is responsible for managing safeguarding concerns, keeping records, and liaising with external agencies where needed.
You can reach our Designated Safeguarding Lead at [email protected] or +44 7476 378692.
If a child is in immediate danger, always call the emergency services on 999 first.
3. Safer recruitment
We are committed to safer recruitment practices. All teachers and volunteers who work with children are subject to an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, reference checks, and an interview before they begin. Safeguarding responsibilities are made clear during induction.
4. Recognising a concern
All staff are expected to be alert to signs that a child may be at risk, including physical, emotional or sexual abuse, neglect, or any change in behaviour that gives cause for concern. Staff are not expected to investigate — only to recognise, record and report.
5. How to raise a concern
If you are a parent, carer, child or member of staff with a safeguarding concern, please contact our Designated Safeguarding Lead as soon as possible using the details above. Concerns are taken seriously, recorded, and handled sensitively and confidentially.
You can also contact external agencies directly at any time:
- Emergency (child in immediate danger): Police & ambulance — 999
- London Borough of Newham — Children's Social Care / MASH: via the council's safeguarding children line
- NSPCC Helpline: 0808 800 5000 — nspcc.org.uk
- Childline (for children & young people): 0800 1111 — childline.org.uk
- Non-emergency police: 101
6. Online safety
For our live online classes, lessons are delivered in a structured, supervised setting. We expect a parent or carer to be aware when a child is attending online, and we ask that lessons take place in a shared family space where possible. Teachers will not contact children privately outside the agreed lesson platform.
7. Staff code of conduct
All staff and volunteers are expected to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with children at all times, to avoid being alone with a child where avoidable, and to model respectful, caring behaviour. Any breach of conduct is treated seriously.
8. Photography & images
We sometimes take photographs of activities to share our work with families and on our channels. We only do so with parental consent, and parents may withdraw consent at any time by contacting us.
9. Anti-bullying
We do not tolerate bullying of any kind. Children are encouraged to speak to a teacher or the DSL if they are worried, and all reports are taken seriously.
10. Review
This policy is reviewed regularly and updated as guidance and good practice evolve. A full copy of our safeguarding procedures is available to parents and carers on request.
